What do Christians think about abortion? How are you going
to reply to those who aren't Christians about something you believe in? The
Holy Book has a lot to tell about those subjects: life, death and pregnancy.
Here are few parts of the Holy Book to understand the Christians view about
abortion.
Many Christians believe that abortion is wrong, because it
is “killing an innocent soul”. Those who argue the point of conception and say
that the fetus is not a real human being, human life begins at the first moment
of the conception, and everyone knows what does the Holy Book say about taking
another person's life. Believing that abortion is wrong, depends on whether or
not you believe aborting an unborn child is killing.
Genesis 9:5 – “Murder is forbidden.”
When does the life begin?
A Christian's view about the beginning of the life depends
on whether or not he or she believes abortion is wrong. The controversy between
people who agree with abortion and those who disagree with it is the beginning
of life. Many Christians believe that the human life begins at the moment of
the meeting between a sperm and an oocyte, while others think that the life
begins when the heart starts beating. The holy Book says that God knew us
before we were placed in our mother's womb, thus many Christians use that as an
evidence, to prove that abortion is forbidden.
Psalm 51:5 – “I was born a sinner – yes, from the moment my
mother conceived me.”
Jeremiah 1:5 – “I knew you before I formed you in your
mother’s womb.”
Who owns your body?
People who agree with abortion think that they have the
full control of their bodies. However, The Holy Book says that God has the
final decision. He controls your body because your body is the house of God.
Others say that God gave us the full-freedom of deciding what happens to our
bodies. Anyway, full-freedom doesn't mean that we don't sin. Either if you
agree or disagree with abortion, it is still biblical to take care of our
bodies.
Corinthians 6:12-13 – “You may say ‘I am allowed to do
anything.’ But I reply, ‘Not everything is good for you.’ And even though ‘I am
allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything…But our bodies
were not made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord
cares about our bodies.”
Corinthians 3:16-17 – “Don’t you realize that all of you
together are the Temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you. God
will bring ruin to anyone who ruins this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and
you Christians are that temple.”
Forgiveness
Every conversation about abortion must discuss the
forgiveness. All sins are forgiven by God. Either if you performed an abortion
before or you know someone planning to abort a pregnancy, there's a chance for
forgiveness. The Holy Book says that God will forgive sin, Jesus Christ, The
Son of God, had been sent to die for our sins.
John 1-9 – “If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful
and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”
Isaiah 1:18 – “No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I
can remove it. I can make you as clean as freshly fallen snow. Even if you are
stained as red as crimson, I can make you as white as sand.”
Ambiguities
Such as many other topics that lead to long argument in
Christianity, abortion is one of those topics which make us shake our heads and
wonder. What if the pregnancy threats the mother's life? What if the baby is
totally deformed, and maybe will not live more than few days? That's why
deciding to have an abortion or not is not always easy. Even those who agree
with abortion don't really support abortion; only support the women right to
choose.
Abortion has effects, either if you think it is a sin or
not. Not too many women who performed an abortion did so accidentally.
Pregnancy comes with a mental state that would be difficult to deal with after
aborting the pregnancy; pregnant teenagers will be having more stress. In many
communities, aborting a pregnancy is legal; it is something we should think
about very carefully.
Discussing abortion with people around you doesn't make it
easy to understand too. If you are a
Christian thinking about abortion, then you should talk to a Christian
psychiatrist, tell him about your feelings, what are the reasons which make you
think about abortion, and ask about things you can do instead of this.
At the same time, it is good to know that, even if you have
had an abortion before, and you feel that you are guilty, you can ask for
forgiveness. God always provide us forgiveness even before we forgive
ourselves. You must know that God is with you, all what you have to do is listening
to what He says. God Loves You.
Either if you agree or disagree with abortion, it is your
choice, but as long as you are Christian, make sure you stand with God when
choosing.
